South Polar Cap Recession

This is an animated gif image of the recession of the south polar cap during the pre-mapping phase of the MGS mission. To see the animation, click on the image. The image is a false-color image where red is temperature and cyan is visual albedo. Notice that a dark region (cold and dark) forms inside the polar cap. This region is the Cryptic region.
